Have you ever met someone who was destined to be in your life but something greater than you knew it first before you did? This can happen on multiple occasions, whether it’s friendship, love, or family. This brings me to one of the most beloved true stories about a woman named Laura Schroff, an 11-year-old boy named Maurice Mazyck, and a fate with destiny that made two strangers’ family not through blood but rather an invisible thread.
What makes this a beautiful story is the authentic sincerity of love that Laura and Maurice show each other over time. One example would be towards the end of the book in chapter 17 when Maurice’s mom Darcella passed away. Maurice’s mom lived a hard life that consisted of drugs, violence, poverty, and other unfortunate circumstances. Even though Darcella wasn’t perfect, the love that she had for her son was all that Maurice could ask for.
She did the best she could to take care of him, and when she needed to, she even fought with a hammer to save him. Maurice knew his mom loved him, and he loved her too. In the midst of all the drugs, poverty, and violence, Laura came into Maurice’s life, and she would soon play a role in Maurice’s life that would ultimately change him for the better.
When Maurice’s mom, Darcella, died of HIV, Maurice looked towards Laurie with his powerful words, saying, “Laurie, you are my mother now.” This is one of the most powerful lines written in the memoir because it reveals the big picture of why Laura and Maurice were placed in each other’s lives, which is to be the family that they didn’t know they needed.
Laura has always wanted to be a mom but has never had any children of her own. Maurice had a mother who loved him, but he lived in a dysfunctional environment. Together, Laura and Maurice became the family they were always meant to have. For Laura, Maurice became the child that she was meant to have to fulfill her dreams of motherhood. For Maurice, Laura became the mother who saved his life and helped him grow into fatherhood.
Also, Laura and Maurice share the commonality of having an abusive father. So, when their paths crossed, they gave each other the genuine love they never had themselves. The invisible thread helped heal each other. The way they see the world is forever changed because of each other, and it doesn’t get more beautiful than that. Another example would be after the end of the story, when Laura did an interview.
One of the questions Laura was asked was why it was important for her to keep her relationship with Maurice a friendship rather than a mother-son relationship. “Early on, I believed it was essential for me not to try to replace Maurice’s mother. The truth is, he had a mother, and he loved her very much, and I am sure she loved him very much.

And I did not want to change that or get in the way of Maurice’s relationship with his mother.” Laura stated. “Perhaps she wasn’t always there for him, and she made bad choices, but I wasn’t living in her shoes, and I didn’t understand the challenges she was facing, and so I never wanted to make life any harder for her.
All I wanted was to help Maurice in any way I could as a friend. And I know to this day Maurice loves his mother and is proud of her for doing what she could to raise her children.” This is another powerful statement because it addresses Laura’s feelings towards Maurice, in which she views him as her son while also respecting the boundaries of Maurice being someone else’s son.
She knows that Darcella isn’t perfect but respects her enough to appreciate that she’s equally a big part of Maurice’s life as she is. They both share a commonality of providing a structured foundation that benefits Maurice, so this statement reflects Laura’s desire to not only remain in Maurice’s life but also to keep Darcella included as well. The third example would also be after the end of the story, in the same interview.
One of the questions Laura was asked was how different her life would be if she hadn’t turned around to meet Maurice. “Quite simply, my life would be a lot emptier had I not turned around that day. I mean, there’s just so much pleasure and happiness that Maurice has brought into my life, and just so many ways he changed how I thought about my life and particularly my childhood.” Laura explained. “The times we spent together just talking, baking cookies, and doing our Monday night rituals were enriching.
He didn’t realize it then, and neither did I, but he was a child teaching an adult the true meaning of love and trust and friendship.” This is the most powerful statement in the memoir because it plays off what I mentioned before about Maurice coming into Laura’s life to be the child she was always meant to have, which would change her life for the better. Because of Maurice, Laura was able to understand her purpose in life, which is that kindness goes a long way, and the stranger you meet could be the stranger who helps you become a better person.
To conclude, families are created in many ways, and the universe works in mysterious ways. In this case, a family was created through the mysterious way of meeting someone on the sidewalk and turning around to offer a simple act of kindness. It’s amazing to know that a simple act of kindness led strangers to where they are today, and it’s amazing to know how their story helped redefine the meaning of what a family is as well as what makes a person considered family.
