Forensic Study Questions Seattle PD’s Verdict

Kurt Cobain’s death was ruled a suicide officially, but forensic investigators think the case should be reopened, after new peer-reviewed research.
Despite the new paper, the Cobain death case still remains closed, and has been updated over the years to re-confirm the first conclusion in 1994. Despite this newer forensic report, the Seattle Police Department told press that the case would not be reopened.
The report was published by the International Journal of Forensic Studies in late 2025, and started receiving media attention recently. Forensic researchers write that they reviewed the on-scene and autopsy evidence of Cobain’s death.Through several levels of research, the forensic scientists believe Cobain was “incapacitated” by a heroin overdose, murdered, and then moved to the location he was found in.
Cobain was found dead on April 8, 1994, but was believed by the King County Medical Examiner in Seattle, Washington to have died on April 5, 1994.
The scientists say that they compared the official ruling of Cobain’s death with evidence that was released at intervals since 1994. In 2014, 37 scene images became available. Two years later, five images were released of the Seattle Police Department holding Cobain’s shotgun. More recent data released in 2023 and finally 2025.
This newer data included new autopsy disclosures and a firearm toolmark. Scientists explain that the lack of access to these documents over the years has slowed the process of demanding a new forensic investigation. Courts denied access to these documents to would-be investigators because of family privacy rights.
