It has been 27 years since the debut of the iconic film “Titanic,” starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet. Since their unforgettable roles in James Cameron’s 1997 masterpiece, the pair have maintained an inseparable bond. The duo reunited on Tuesday, November 19, at Harmony Gold in Los Angeles for the screening of Winslet’s new film, “Lee,” which premiered in September.
The film “Lee”, directed by Ellen Kuras, stars Winslet as Elizabeth ‘Lee’ Miller, a former fashion model who later became a World War II photographer. Leonardo DiCaprio hosted the screening event and praised Winslet, describing her as “one of the great talents of my generation” in a video from the event.
In a video during the introduction, DiCaprio said, “Kate, my dear friend, your work in this film has been nothing short of transformative.” He went on to say, “I continue to be awestruck. I continue to admire your strength, integrity, talent, and passion in every single project that you create”, according to Deadline.
The audience cheered as DiCaprio welcomed Winslet on stage, planting a kiss on her lips and then hugging her. The two friends also posed for a picture at the event beside a poster for Winslet’s new film, according to The New York Post.
The New York Post reported that the film “Lee” took eight years to make and premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival in September. The cast that starred alongside Winslet includes Marion Cotillard, Andrea Riseborough, Andy Samberg, Josh O’Connor, and Alexander Skarsgard.
The pair have remained close since starring in “Titanic” together 27 years ago. During an interview with Entertainment Tonight last year, Winslet said that she and DiCaprio “clicked immediately, right away.”
Winslet described DiCaprio as being “just free with himself.” Winslet elaborated on DiCaprio, saying, “He had this effervescent energy that was magnetic.”
During the Entertainment Tonight interview, Winslet stated that she knew it would be “fun” working with DiCaprio on “Titanic.” Winslet confirmed that she and DiCaprio remained close and always made sure to never miss each other’s phone calls.
Winslet said, “In the world that we live in now, to have friendships that bind you and that shared history, it’s really something.” After the duo couldn’t see each other during the pandemic, DiCaprio and Winslet were able to finally have a reunion in 2021, nearly three years after their last meeting.
In an interview with The Guardian, Winslet stated that she “couldn’t stop crying” when she was finally able to catch up with DiCaprio in Los Angeles.
Winslet said, “I’ve known him for half my life.” she said, “He’s my friend, my really close friend. We’re bonded for life“. Their enduring friendship has stood the test of time, never letting go, just as their iconic characters in “Titanic.”
