The Cleveland Cavaliers have become the talk of the NBA, opening their 2024-2025 season with a blistering 14-0 start.
This feat, accomplished with a resounding 144-126 victory over the Chicago Bulls on Friday, places them among the ranks of some of the league’s greatest opening season win streaks.
Led by superstar guard Donovan Mitchell, the Cavaliers have demonstrated an impressive blend of defensive intensity and offensive versatility, establishing themselves as one of the league’s most well-rounded squads. Mitchell’s clutch performances, complemented by breakout contributions from rising star Evan Mobley and the poise of Darius Garland, have been pivotal in securing this unbeaten streak.
Historical Comparisons: Chasing Greatness
The Cavaliers’ 14-0 start draws inevitable comparisons to past legendary teams that have reached similar marks. Historically, only five previous teams have managed to open the season with a win streak of 14 games or more:
2015-16 Golden State Warriors (24-0): The most recent and memorable case was the Golden State Warriors, who started their campaign with an NBA record 24-0 run. Led by the “Splash Brothers” Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson, that squad finished the regular season 73-9, setting a new record for wins.
1993-94 Houston Rockets (15-0): Hakeem Olajuwon and the Rockets also opened their season 15-0, ultimately securing the franchise’s first ever NBA championship. The Cavaliers, with their strong frontcourt presence in Mobley and Jarrett Allen, have often drawn comparisons to that Rockets team in terms of their defensive prowess and interior dominance.
1948-49 Washington Capitols (15-0): One of the early powerhouses in the league, the Capitols held a 15-0 record starting the season in the BAA.
2002-03 Dallas Mavericks (14-0): The Mavericks, led by Dirk Nowitzki, had a blazing start to their season. However they fell short in the playoffs despite their hot start, serving as a reminder that early success does not always guarantee postseason glory.
1957-58 Boston Celtics (14-0): Led by Bill Russell, this win streak came the season after their first of 11 championships in his era.
Four of the previous five teams to reach this mark went on to reach the championship series in their respective seasons.
The Cavaliers are trying to write a new chapter in NBA history by maintaining their momentum. Should they secure a 15th consecutive win, they would become just the fourth team to reach a 15-0 start to an NBA season and become tied for the second highest winning streak to start a season in NBA history.
The Cavaliers’ Winning Formula

While the Cavaliers of past years were known for their defense, the 2024-25 Cavaliers have flipped the script with an elite offensive system. The team currently boasts the highest offensive rating in the NBA at 121.8 points per 100 possessions, a testament to their efficient and versatile attack.
The key to this offensive explosion is the chemistry between Donovan Mitchell and Darius Garland, whose court vision has been instrumental in orchestrating the offense. Garland is averaging 6.6 assists per game, threading pinpoint passes to teammates both in transition and the half-court set.
The Cavaliers also benefit from Mitchell’s current scoring tear, averaging 24.6 points per game with a blistering 42.1% from beyond the arc. He is currently 15th in the NBA in scoring.
Rising star Evan Mobley has also taken a new leap in his game. The 7-footer has expanded his offensive arsenal, averaging a career-high 17.8 points per game. The fourth-year forward anchors the Cavaliers’ frontcourt alongside the veteran center Jarret Allen.
The Cavaliers’ high-powered offense isn’t just about individual brilliance, however, it’s a cohesive system that leverages a deep roster. The bench depth with Caris LeVert in the second unit allows Cleveland to maintain offensive fluidity even when Mitchell or Garland take a breather.
Can Cleveland Sustain This Momentum?
With a tough schedule ahead, the Cavaliers will be tested as they look to maintain their perfect start. The upcoming matchup against the Boston Celtics, one of the league’s top defensive squads, will serve as a litmus test for Cleveland’s high-flying offense.
As Cleveland gears up to extend their winning streak, the buzz around the city is palpable. For a fan base that hasn’t seen a championship since the magical run in 2016, hopes are high that this new-look Cavaliers squad might be the one to bring another title to The Land.
For now, though, Cleveland fans are relishing every moment of this red-hot start, daring to dream that their beloved Cavaliers might just be in the running for another NBA championship.
