How Trump’s Economic Focus Led to His Stunning Reelection

In 2016, Donald Trump shocked the world by being elected the 45th president of the United States when many people didn’t think he would. Eight years later, Donald Trump shocked the world again by recently winning reelection and becoming the 47th President of the United States, when many people didn’t believe it would be possible.

He didn’t even just win the Electoral College; he also won the popular vote. So, how did this happen? How did Donald Trump pull off the biggest political comeback in history? The answer to that question can be as simple as “It’s the economy, stupid.” In other words, Donald Trump’s focus regarding key political issues was different from Kamala Harris’s.

While Kamala mostly focused on abortion, Donald Trump focused on the economy, inflation, and immigration. “To Trump’s top aides, the thesis of the campaign could be summed up in a simple slogan: “Max out the men and hold the women.” Staff Writer Eric Cortellessa stated in Time Magazine.

“That meant emphasizing the economy and immigration, which Trump did relentlessly.” The reason why these matters is that many Americans viewed the current state of the economy with great dissatisfaction, so much so that voters had repeatedly stated that the main political issue for the election was the economy.

Even though several major metrics viewed the economy positively, the American people didn’t feel the same way. They blamed Joe Biden and Kamala Harris for being the reasons why. In comparison to Kamala Harris, Donald Trump tapped into issues that deeply affected people more than the issue of abortion. As a result, many people gravitated to Donald Trump because he made them feel seen, heard, and not forgotten.
