Trump Rally Controversy: Hinchcliffe’s Offensive Jokes Spark Outrage

It appears that the closer we get to Election Day, the more controversies will pile up. Presidential hopeful, former president, and native New Yorker Donald Trump held a rather memorable rally in Madison Square Garden, New York. The most memorable and controversial moment was when he brought comedian Tony Hinchcliffe onto his rally stage.

Mr. Hinchcliffe spewed an array of racist jokes, which understandably sent Democrats and many other Americans in an outrage. Many Democrats, politicians, celebrities, and Americans have spoken out about their dismay, President Joe Biden was one of them.

One of the most offensive jokes Mr. Hinchliffe uttered was the one where he called Puerto Rico “a floating island of garbage in the middle of the ocean.” This obviously sparked much outrage, along with his other offensive jokes about Latinos, African Americans, and Arab Americans. President Biden caught a wave of this comment, and he responded rather powerfully to the remarks.

According to AP News, President Biden said: “Just the other day, a speaker at his rally called Puerto Rico a floating island of garbage. Well, let me tell you something, I don’t, I don’t know the Puerto Rican that I know, the Puerto Rico where I’m fr — in my home state of Delaware. They’re good, decent honorable people,” he continues, “The only garbage I see floating out there is his supporters. His demonization of Latinos is unconscionable, and it’s un-American. It’s totally contrary to everything we’ve done, everything we’ve been.”

President Biden later clarified his statement, saying: “His demonization of Latinos is unconscionable. That’s all I meant to say. The comments at that rally don’t reflect who we are as a nation,” according to BBC News. Vice President and Trump’s running mate Kamala Harris defended President Biden and herself, saying: “Let me be clear, I strongly disagree with any criticism of people based on who they vote for.”
