Recent E. Coli Outbreak Linked to Baby Carrots: What You Need to Know

States across America have experienced recent cases of E. Coli, a bacterial infection often caused by consuming lousy food. As of yet, there has been one death due to the illness and fifteen total hospitalizations. Eighteen states have had cases, with the most cases occurring in Washington, Minnesota, and New York.

The cause of the E. Coli is a brand of organic baby carrots produced by Grimmway Farms. This California-based carrot producer is one of the world’s largest. Their carrots are sold under more than fifteen different brands in stores like Target, Kroger, Walmart, Whole Foods, and others.

Since cases began popping up in September, their products have been recalled from store shelves. However, Grimmway Farms owns many already-purchased carrots, which may still be a risk for customers who are unaware. They recommend returning or discarding the carrots and cleaning any surfaces the carrots might have touched.

E. Coli, the CDC warns, is a particular hazard to those under five or over sixty-five. People who experience mild symptoms of E. Coli often recover after a week. However, those with severe symptoms (such as diarrhea, fever, or vomiting) are advised to go to their local health center.
